Hook and Loop Classroom Pennants

Summer is drawing close to an end and the new school year will be upon us in no time. This is the perfect time for school districts and classroom teachers to be thinking about new projects that we can do in the classroom. We know that teachers want to plan ahead and do as much as they can with the budget provided. This is why certain products, such as hook and loop rolls, are so extremely popular with teachers and public school districts to complete many classroom projects.

One thing that can work great in your school classroom is a pennant flag banner. Today we’re going to create one using some basic materials which include decorative scrapbook paper, hook and loop, laminate, and a permanent marker.

The first thing you will need to do is create your pennants. To make the most out of our budgeted materials, we want this pennant banner to use interchangeable letters. Using this method, school teachers can switch things out during the course of the year without creating a completely new banner.

  1. Cut your scrapbook paper into large triangles and laminate them.
  2. Cut your solid colored paper into circles, placing letters on each one with a permanent marker before laminating. The circles need to fit within the area of your triangles.
  3. Using glue, attach a small piece of hook material to each pennant triangle and a piece of loop material to the back of each circle.

Because the hook and loop method allows us to easily change out the letters, you can change your message over and over again. You might want to greet all your classroom students on the first day of school with a “Welcome Back” pennant banner. Another great idea is to use this as a recognition and reward system. Through other classroom activities, each student could take turns having their name displayed on the banner. The hook and loop makes this possible.

How school teachers hang the banner will depend on your classroom. If you do not have an area large enough to mount it using push pins, you can cut a longer strip from your hook and loop rolls and mount the pennants directly to it.
